The KIRO SAPI Plate Leve III++ STA is a UHMW-PE hard plate that is an add-on component/insert to a ballistic vest Level III+. Therefore, SAPI Plate Level III++ STA with a Protection Level 3++ has the primary purpose of absorbing and disrupting the kinetic energy of a bullet impact and reducing the blunt trauma transferred to the wearer of the vest. (Vest is sold separately)

Therefore, SAPI Plate Level III++ STA is made with Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE). While, UHMWPE is odorless, tasteless, and nontoxic, it is a very tough material. It has the highest impact strength of any thermoplastic presently made to create a hard armor plate.

For instance, compared to traditional metal ones or ceramics, the UHMW-PE plates have a much stronger bulletproof capability based on their special molecular structure. Therefore, these ceramics are often composite blends.

UHMW-PE plates’ thickness and weight offer a critical advantage over steel armor plates simply because they’re lighter. However, the decreased weight comes with a price—ceramic body armor is typically thicker than steel.
